Even though this entire woods gets morels, at this time they were only present at the very bottom of the mountain. The tulip poplar had leaves at the bottom of the mountain but not at the top. Later in the season, the morels will work up the hill. The morels were growing on a south facing hill. This area has 5 huge man made caves where they mined out limestone the large cave was about 40 feet tall and 40 feet wide. I was told it takes 2 1/2 hours to walk through them. The five caves were side by side. Trees: Tulip poplar and a few elm. The tulip poplar trees had leaves about 1/4 inches long. Plants: The Mayapples were 6 inches tall. Cohosh was nearby and about 1 foot tall. Air Temperature: 60 degrees. Soil Temperature: 55 degrees. Soil PH: 7.
