Apothecium mature (spores puffed when lifted from collection basket); 14 cm high; 10 cm wide at widest point; cap loosely aggregated into 3-4 lobes with loosely sewn seams. Hymenium reddish brown (near oac659); glabrous or in places very finely rugged; broadly wrinkled. Excipular surface watery cream (near oac809); visible on seams; not tightly adhering to stipe, but intergrown with it in one location; finely pubescent. Stipe about 9 x 6 cm; surface watery cream or whitish; watery gray where handled; very broadly columned, with rounded ribs up to 2 cm wide; basal mycelium white. Context chambered in stem; not branching in cap; white in interior areas, watery tan near surfaces. Odor not distinctive. Chemicals (24 hours after collection, storage without refrigeration): Ammonia negative on flesh and hymenium; KOH negative on flesh and hymenium; Iron Salts negative on hymenium, faintly bluish on flesh. Stem surface with occasional hyaline (KOH mount) elements, cystidia-like, cylindric to clavate, with swollen apices, 72-96 x 7-8 µ, usually in bundles of 2-3. Paraphyses narrow; to 7 µ wide; with swollen apices; with orangish, granular contents in KOH. Asci 8-spored; up to 240 x 20 µ. Spores 27-32 x 11-13 µ; uni- to triguttulate, but usually with one large central droplet and two smaller apical droplets; smooth in a KOH mount; ornamented with 2-8 apical projections in a water mount, the projections extending up to 1.5 µ.
