Forest floor densely covered with nettles, poison ivy, and brambles. Ash trees, fairly mature, 6 and 10 feet away; also a mulberry nearby. Soil temperature 64.7 degrees. Heavy rain the night before. Apothecium 2-4 cm across; irregular; nearly cuplike in some young specimens; typically developing into a saddle-shaped lobe with an acute sinus, but sometimes irregularly lobed; the margin inrolled when young, in maturity touching the stem and other points but not adhering; hymenium smooth; dry; white or dirty white, becoming grayish or pale grayish brown. Excipular surface whitish; pubescent. Stem 2.5-9 cm x 3-10 mm; more or less equal; smooth; hollow; snapping cleanly; with a verpa-like, cottony pith inside; two specimens (in over 50) developing a furrow/groove in the lower stem. Odor sweetish mild; taste not distinctive. Flesh insubstantial; brittle; whitish. Spores 16-21 x 11-13 µ; elliptical; smooth. Asci 8-spored; 168-192 x 12 µ.
