July 17, 2004

The Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont hosted a one day ( July 17, 2004 ) workshop on all three groups of Eumycetozoans. This workshop was held in association with the 2004 meeting of the Mycological Society of America. This workshop as attended by professional mycologists, national park personel, interested amateur naturalists, and teachers interested in bringing eumycetozoans into the laboratory. The participants were about 20 in number. Short sessions on protostelids, dictyostelids, and myxomycetes were led by Fred Spiegel, John Landolt, and Steve Stephenson respectively. The teachers were assisted by Lora Lindley, Satyendra “Raj” Rajguru, John Shadwick, and Andy Swanson. Techniques for identification and collection were taught for all three groups of slime molds. Such an intensive workshop was exhausting but very rewarding as all participants had learned a great deal by the end of the day.
