Great Smoky Mountains National Park

July 15-16, 2006

An intensive collecting/educational event (“Myxo Blitz 2006”) was held in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the weekend of July 15-16, 2006 . The event, which was based at the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center at Purchase Knob, brought together a group of researchers, educators, students and volunteers who spent two days carrying out field surveys for myxomycetes in a number of localities on the south side of the Park. This portion of the Park has been understudied in previous efforts to document the distribution and occurrence of myxomycetes. More than 200 specimens that had fruited in the field under natural conditions were collected.
