Carlos earned both his BS degree in Biology and his MS degree in Botany from the University of Costa Rica. He has worked with the taxonomy and ecology of higher fungi and lichens, but his MS research project examined the species composition and effects of microenvironmental factors on the fruiting patterns of myxomycetes in a high-elevation oak forest in the mountains of Costa Rica . Carlos has studied myxomycetes in a number of regions of Costa Rica and also in other parts of Central America . He is interested in the biology of the myxomycetes (and also higher fungi), especially those species found in the Tropics, and is currently working towards a PhD in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Arkansas.
