Table Mountain Pine (Pinus pungens) [ Trees > Conifers > Pines . . . ] Forest Type: Mixed Appalachian
by Michael Kuo Habitat: Scattered at higher elevations in the Appalachian Mountains, especially on dry and rocky slopes and ridges; usually mixed with other trees but occasionally growing in pure stands. Stature: 20-60 feet high; trunk to 1.5 feet in diameter; with an irregular crown. Needles: In bundles of 2 (rarely 3); 1-2.5 inches long; dark blue-green; stiff and sharp; twisted. Bark: Light to dark brown; broken into plates. Cones: 2.5-3.5 inches long; oblong; scales thick, tipped with long, hooked prickles. |
